Tomten Pattern: Tomten by Elizabeth Zimmerman, from Knitting Without Tears Yarn: Cestari Wool 2-ply Yardage: I don’t really know because I used up the ends of skeins I had but the sweater weighs exactly one pound so it probably took just over four 210 yard skeins Needles: US size 7 Gauge: 3.5 st/in Modifications: After the split for the arm holes I knit 5 fewer ridges before I rejoined the pieces — this was an accident that thankfully worked out alright. I made the sleeves 58 ridges instead of the 56 called for in the pattern. I knit a 6 row border around the front of the sweater. |

Clown Costume Pattern: McCall’s 3531 Fabric: this Alexander Henry heart print, two other Joann’s prints, and pink cotton Yardage: less than 1 yard each Size: 6 Modifications: I split the dress down the middle to make it more clown-like. For the skirt I just moved the side hems to the front and back. The bodice had two back pieces so I cut each from a different fabric. For the bodice front I sewed the two pieces I wanted to use together and then used the seam as the fold line when cutting out the pattern piece. I added a pink ruffle at the bottom and made a pink ruffle collar separately. As usual I didn’t use the pattern pieces for the skirt, I just figured the length I wanted and used two fabric widths. |

Twirly Skirt Pattern: Adapted from the twirly skirt tutorial Fabric: 2006 Quilt of Dreams for St. JUDE Children’s Research Hospital Yardage: less than two yards Size: 110 Modifications: I omitted the contrast fabric and just used the main fabric instead. I doubled the width of the hem band so I could self face it and avoid top stitching (because of the non-fuctioning sewing machine). I also just used elastic for the waist band and omitted the ribbon/contrast tie. I added the eyelet ruffle trim at the hem band. |

Monica Sweater Pattern: Monica from Knitty Yarn: Cascade Sierra in colors 01 and 29 Yardage: less than one 191 yard skein of each color Needles: US size 7 Gauge: st/in Modifications: A lot. First of all, I knit the sweater in the round. For the size six sweater this meant I cast on 126 stitches and knit 3 rows in garter stitch. Then I purled the first stitch of the next round, knit 61 stitches, purled 2 stitches, knit 61 stitches, purled 1 stitch. I continued to work in this way until I ran out of yellow yarn about one inch before the length I needed. So, I knit the remaining inch in the lavender. I knit the ruffle in the round as well, casting on 248 stitches for the size six sweater and knitting three rows in garter stitch. I continued knitting all rounds until the ruffle was 2.25″ in length — shorter than specified in the pattern. For the next row I knit the first stitch, knit two together 61 times, knit 2, knit two together 61 times, knit 1. When binding off I accidentally made the straps 3 stitches wide instead of the 4 stitches specified in the pattern. The last modification was I knit the straps the full length — 7″ for the size six sweater — and then used kitchener stitch to attach them to the three held stitches on the back of the sweater. |
