Last night I made peach cobbler — with a half a dozen lingering blackberries thrown in for good measure — with some peaches I had forgotten were in the fridge. I forgot to add sugar to the fruit. I’m not really sure how I did that because really, you don’t do more than add sugar to the fruit before you dump it in the baking dish. I guess I should be glad I sliced them. Anyway, the absence of sugar went pretty unnoticed since the fruit is so ripe. Plus no sugar made it perfectly acceptable — in my mind — to have cobbler for breakfast.
Clearly though, it’s that time of year to start the canning pot boiling and put up the harvest. I’ve never made peach jam before but I think we’ll do that tomorrow. If they’re sweet enough to be a no-sugar cobbler just imagine the jam, mmmm. Tonight we’re going to be making refrigerator pickles to clear out some cucumbers before we get another load from the CSA tomorrow. Anybody have a favorite canning recipe to share? I’d love to try some new ones this year.

We got our share a day early this week because of Independence Day tomorrow. This was the first week of our flower share — hooray! I love the zinnias we’ll be getting all summer. Katie wants to know if the flowers can be for her room. By the way, we’re saving this week’s hot-dogs for tomorrow — tonight we’re having this:
CSA Bag Contents: Swiss Chard, Garlic, Cucumber, Onion, Basil, Rosemary, Fennel, Eggplant, Kohlrabi, 1/2 doz. eggs
We didn’t get the share for week 5 in 2006.
The title of this post could also be This is What We Got in our CSA and My Kids are Having Hot-Dogs for Dinner. Don’t worry, they’re organic all beef overpriced hot-dogs — doesn’t organic hot-dog seem like an oxymoron? — but hot-dogs all the same. Oh, and mac-and-cheese, they’re having that too. Around 3:00 I realized that the three bites of leftover ratatouille I had for lunch weren’t going to sate me until dinner so I ate some leftover bunnies and cheese and now I have a stomach ache. It also could just be that my abs hurt from being abused by the trainer at the gym. Either way, I don’t feel like cooking anything. So hot-dogs and mac-and-cheese it is. But tomorrow…
