Welcome and A Year in Review

I’ve been seeing a bit of a traffic surge here at Mama Urchin in the last few days due, in large part, to my recent whiplash win over at Whip Up. Thanks so much Kath for choosing my little pea as one of the winners. And thanks also go to Blair for such a fun idea that I only adapted. Wow, this is starting to sound like the academy awards, and I’d like to thank Jill at my LYS for helping me select the yarn…. Seriously though, thank you.

And, I figured since there might be some new folks hanging around I would share a mosaic of some of the notable creations of 2006. I’ve been meaning to do one of these anyway and, with all the new traffic, now seemed like the perfect time. The links will take you to the flickr photos — for more information about each project you’ll just have to poke around.

Handmade Christmas Recap

Hat and Scarf

I apologize in advance if this post seems a little braggy but I want to recap all the gifts I made by hand this year if for no other reason than to remind myself next November that it’s worth it. I amazingly got just about everything done that I had planned. Here’s the lowdown:

Now I just need to update my Completed Projects – 2006 and I’ll be ready to start fresh for 2007.

And Done

Stitchette

Pattern: Free Pattern from Wee Wonderfuls
Modifications: I omitted the circles on the dress and shoes. I intended to use small jingle bells but couldn’t find bells small enough. I also didn’t put eyes on the doll.

Tulle Bag

Pattern: flower-trimmed evening bag from the book simple knits with a twist by Erika Knight
Yarn: Silver tulle cut into a long strip
Yardage: ?? I used less than a 3.5 yd x 52 in. piece of tulle cut into a strip as directed in the book
Needles: US size 13
Gauge: I didn’t get gauge but it doesn’t really matter — you can adjust the size of the bag to match the gauge
Modifications: The bag size ended up differently because of the gauge. I also omitted the flower and used an embellished trim instead of the wired ribbon. I couldn’t find sueded ribbon so I used a one inch tube made from ultra-suede for the handles.

Swap-o-mania

Open Yours Too Trade 05So we are in the midst of swap mania around here. First, I participated in the Open Yours Too trade 05. It was a supply trade and the USPS assures me that the package has been delivered so I have no problem posting it here. I was paired up with Dawbis — who is also the organizer — and she chose ribbon embroidery and/or stumpwork as her craft of choice for the trade. All I have to say is I’m glad I’m not into ribbon embroidery because I would be hard-pressed to find supplies. I visited every craft store in the area as well as visiting or calling all the cross-stitch stores within a reasonable distance and was only able to find a few things. Fortunately, I found a kit for a wedding pillow, she was recently married, and I had some coordinating linen in my stash. I’ll post when I receive my package, I chose knitting as my craft.

kids cd swapWe’re also doing the kid cd swap, organized by Tracy of jumilla bugs. This is going to be super fun because our partner family lives in Australia — how cool is that. We’ve been working on our playlist and some other goodies too. That should get sent tomorrow, or maybe Saturday, so I’ll post more about it over on urchins when everything is sent/received.

Lastly, I joined the One Skein knit-along and secret pal exchange. Both are based on the book One Skein by Leigh Radford. The book has some great projects that use only one skein of yarn — a great way to use up your stash or odds & ends. The exchange is pretty cool though, in June and July you send one skein of yarn and then in August you send a project created with one skein of yarn. I think it’s going to be fun.
