Another double dress — you might ask why I keep making myself twice the work — for Katrina. I found the Alexander Henry Plymouth fabric when we were in CA in August and thought it would be a sweet dress. The idea percolated in my head for a while and this is what I came up with. I adjusted the bodice pieces from McCalls pattern 3531 and used two half yard lengths for the skirt on the pinafore. I used a Butterick shirt pattern — B4118 — to create the underdress but increased the length and made different sleeves. Most of the edges on both pieces are finished with a rolled hem — I love my serger — which made for some quick finishing. The underdress has a cord at the neck to gather. Katie and I decided that this will be the winter nightgown design, I’ll just replace the cord with elastic. Now I need to start on the Christmas party/choir concert outfit — two pieces once again. What can I say, I’m a glutton for punishment.
Well, these are all doubly cute, so as long as you’re enjoying the process, go for it. I can’t wait to see the Christmas outfit.

I think I understand the impulse toward “double-dressing”….I always try to make my daughter’s pinafores reversible, not just so that I can avoid the annoyance of making facings or using bias tape, but because I love the “presto change-o” factor. My friends assume I do it so that, if my daughter gets messy, I can just turn whatever she’s wearing inside out. That seems weird to me–what kid really wants to have her mess closer to her skin? (Mine doesn’t, anyway).
I think I also just like having an excuse to buy more cloth (I’m not proud of that part).
