The garden party to celebrate Katrina’s fourth birthday was yesterday. It was really, really great — if I do say so myself — in large part because we had beautiful weather — better than a garden party in the family room. We decorated pots using adhesive grout and decorative glass gems (prettier colors than the linked photo). We also had each child plant a snapdragon plant in their pot.
The highlight, I think, was the cake. I used this recipe to make a dirt cake and put it in a glazed flower part. Then I added the artificial flowers and a few gummy worms. We put the candles on this cake but instead of dishing the “dirt” onto plates for each of the kids I made little individual pots of dirt using some small enamel pails. They loved it, in fact some of the kids — especially the boys — were afraid to eat it because they thought it was real dirt.
Katie wore an outfit made by Sandi of Portabello Pixie. Katie has a Christmas outfit made by her too. Her aesthetic is definitely frilly and over the top and you can’t even see the ruffled pants that go with either outfit. All in all it was a wonderful day. We’re still beaming from the ten thankyous we got from our little not-quite-four girl.

that is such an awesome idea for a cake! when i saw the candles, i was a bit confused at first because i hadn’t read the text. i’m going to steal this idea for the day i have kids
