This little package is intended as a new baby gift for my dear friend’s baby. The baby will be nine months old on Friday and the original knit gift was meant to be something entirely different. But, as it sometimes goes, my repeated attempts with the original yarn and pattern just wouldn’t work right so the project kept getting abandoned in frustration. In the meantime the baby girl arrived — the original idea was in green because we didn’t know the baby’s gender — so we gave them a gift with the promise of the real (knitted) gift soon.
Fast forward to late summer of last year when a local yarn store was selling some of their samples. Amongst the sweaters and scarves there was this lovely little crocheted blanket and I thought, Hey, I’ve got some of that yarn at home in my stash. So I came home, checked the gauge of the yarn and went through my books looking for a pattern and found nothing. Frustrated again.
Back in October I mentioned that I had started working on this gift as a sweater knitted in the round and without a pattern. I had taken it off the needles to try it on Tristan — it’s handy having a baby around sometimes — and that is how it remained until just last week. With the holiday crunch over I decided I MUST finish this project, especially since it was so close to completion. So here we are, FINALLY, a basic little jumper that the baby can wear as a dress now and as she gets bigger she can wear it as a smock-type shirt over a tee with pants — as modeled here by my son, Tristan (sorry Papa!).
Only three months to finish the sweater for her first birthday!
