Have you seen this book? It’s a darling book about a little pea who is forced to eat candy for dinner. If he eats all his dinner he can have spinach for dessert. A while ago I saw the book on Blair‘s site and the matching pea made of green velvet. A.DOR.A.BLE. We’re giving Katrina a book with a toy — which I also first saw at Blair’s blog — so we thought we’d do something similar for Tristan. I guess I’m just a big Blair copycat.
Our pea was knitted in Lamb’s Pride Bulky using a ball pattern from the book Knitting for Baby by Melanie Falick and Kristin Nicholas. I knit the ball all in one piece using short rows for shaping. Then I closed it up leaving a hole for stuffing and felt it — mine went through the wash twice. After it was felted I stuffed it — I embroidered the pea’s freckles first. Then I closed up the hole and sent it through the wash again to felt the yarn I used to sew it shut. After it was nice and dry I used felt scraps to create the eyes and mouth and then attached them to the pea with embroidery floss. Voila! A little pea for our little pea.

(How perfect that I am partaking in a cup of split pea soup while reading this blog entry!)
I love that book! We checked it out of our library after Blair’s mention. Your little pea is quite adorable! What a special present for a little urchin! Merry Christmas!

Oh, call me crazy, but I didn’t know that felting changed the color that much! Either way, it’s perfect and truly adorable.
