White

White

When Stefan and I were first married our bedroom had a vaulted ceiling and the wall behind our bed was blue. To break up the expanse I decided I wanted an all white quilt — don’t know where I got the idea — also known as a bride’s quilt to hang on the wall. I love quilts but I am not a quilter, so I began searching near and far for exactly what I had in mind. BTW – this happens to me a lot, I see something in my head and then have to search, sometimes fruitlessly, to match that thing in my head. It can be very annoying but also really awesome when it works out. So, anyway, I remember standing on the porch of an old house in Intercourse or Bird in Hand — don’t you love amish town names — in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania telling Stefan on the mobile phone that I had found it but White Detailthat it cost a lot of money (in retrospect it doesn’t seem so much). I guess he could tell in my voice that if I didn’t get it, I’d regret it so he blessed the transaction and I got my quilt.

We’ve since moved from that first place and there isn’t really a wall big enough to display the quilt properly in our current home so the bride’s quilt is packed neatly away but I decided to get it out to show you. The entire thing is hand-quilted which is more than amazing to me. The quarter is there in the second shot so you can see how detailed the quilting is. Really incredible. The quilt was created by a woman named Mary Otto, I wish I could have met her.

Thanks Stephanie and Mav for the inspiration for Color Week #2.

The hand quilting on this is truly incredible. The detail and balance of the pattern is beautiful. You certainly don’t see much hand quilting anymore and certainly not any like this that would be affordable enough to purchase. What a treasure. Thank you for sharing it.

That is a beautiful quilt! I love the pattern. I imagine it looked just perfect against the blue walls!
